Arlon Ray Smith

December 7, 1927 ~ August 16, 2015 (age 87) 87 Years Old


Arlon Ray Smith, age 87, of Sheffield, Al., died Sunday, August 16, 2015 after an extended illness. Graveside service will be Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Colbert Memorial Gardens at 11:00 AM. Presiding will be Dr. Douglas Shields. Ray attended Cherokee High School and served two years in the US Navy. He attended Freed Hardeman College, Union University, and University of Tennessee. He worked 28 years as a federal agent for the IRS. Ray was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ. He attended Annapolis Avenue Church of Christ for 41 years and the last 17 years he attended Chapel Hill Church of Christ. Both congregations meant a lot to him. Ray never met a stranger and was a good man, he will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by parents, Fletcher and Ora Emma Smith,  his first wife, Margie Smith; brothers, Elbert Smith, Boyd Smith, and Vernon Smith; sisters, Alfa Hester, Evelyn Daily, Beulah King, Loral Guyton, Genevieve James and Gwen Belue.

Mr. Smith was survived by his wife, Edna Smith; daughter, Deb Sneed (Joe), of Birmingham; grandchildren, Kaitie Sneed and Joseph Sneed, of Birmingham; brother, Fletcher Smith (Barbara) of Florence; sister, Bertha Bradley, of Nashville; stepsons, Jonathan McGee and Patrick McGee; step granddaughters, Lauren McCurry and Mackenzie McGee.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan McGee, Patrick McGee, Phillip Smallwood, Charles Barnes, Rex Keeton, and Tim McCurry.

Special thanks to Dr. Ron McCoy, Dr. Loren McCoy and their staff. Southern Hospice nurses, Rose, Jessica, and Felicia, social workers, Stephanie and Cindy. A special thanks to Rays sitter and home helper, Brittany Hill. We would like to extend our appreciation from our hearts to everyone at Keller Landing who took such good care of Ray the last 30 days.
