Fred Clayton Isom – Tuscumbia

Northwest Alabama lost a giant of a man this week.  Fred Clayton Isom was a self made man, a dare-devil and a big kid who loved to pick at folks.  He was always digging in the dirt and dreaming of building new things.   Known as Pawpaw to grandchildren and great-grands, he always had time for children in his orbit, making them feel special by playfully engaging with them and riding them miles and miles on four-wheelers and golf carts.  The world looked small when he would put them on his giant machines.  Clayton worked hard every day and, with his sons built a successful construction and heavy equipment business, C&I Construction, and with his daughter and wife built a successful restaurant, The Rocking Chair. He was a risk taker and an innovator and his children will continue to build on his legacy.  While roads might be a little safer now, there will be a little less mischief and a little less smiling.  He will surely be missed by all that knew and loved him.

Fred Clayton Isom passed away November 28, 2016 at Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield, AL after a brief illness.  He was the owner/President of C&I Contractors, Inc.  He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.  Born November 7, 1932 in Russellville, AL; he was the son of Fred Brown Isom and Alma Mae Grissom Isom.  He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Bernice Marie Romans Isom; children, Fred Steven Isom (Julie) of Cayce, SC; David Clayton Isom (Mary); James Ray Isom (Michelle); Sharon Ruth Isom Pullen (Charles) and Michael Bruce Isom (Deanna); grandchildren, Christy Isom Watkins, Justin Smith, Tiffany Isom Stonecipher (Heath), Karli Isom Ott (Mark), Jared Clayton Smith, Kalli Isom Archer (Brandon), David Clayton Isom, Jr., Clinton Ray Isom, Anna Kaitlan Isom Barnes (Justin), Micah Addison Isom; thirteen great grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Ione Isom Helsley all of Tuscumbia, AL, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Nellie Isom Porter (Rather), Ludie Isom Wagnon (Roy), Freddie Mae Isom Malone (L.D.), Mildred Ione Isom Helsley (Bruce), and Betty Jean Isom Hester (Nathan).
