Roy Douglas Thompson

July 12, 1934 ~ February 19, 2017 (age 82) 82 Years Old


Roy Douglas Thompson, 82, died February 19, 2017, at his residence following a lengthy sickness, which had kept him confined most of the past seven years. Visitation will be Tuesday February 12-2p.m. funeral 2p.m. at Colbert Memorial Chapel, with Ben Hayes and Jeff Abrams officiating. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his two children, Sharon Thompson Fincher and Steven Thompson, his parents, Jim and Louella Thompson and eleven siblings, un-named twins, Jewel, Jonas, William, James, Jr., Howard, Marvin, Melvin, Brancel and Allen.

 

Survivors include his soulmate, the love of his life, his wife of almost 55 years, Barbara Hallmark Thompson; son, Dan Thompson of Orange Beach, AL; daughter, Babs Thompson Olive (Wade) of Muscle Shoals; his special grandchildren, Andrew Kelsey, Brayden Thompson, Austin Kelsey, Brylee Thompson and Lani Olive; a sister, Ellen Hill of Florence; numerous nieces and nephews. Roy was especially close to Barbara’s family: her deceased parents, Travis and Alma Hallmark, deceased brother, W.T. and wife Avon Hallmark; her brothers Monroe Hallmark (Mavis), T.C. Hallmark (Norma); nieces and nephews.

 

Roy has been a long-time member of Highland Park Church of Christ in Muscle Shoals .He missed not being physically able to attend church in a couple of years. The members missed his singing.

 

Roy loved gospel music and was reputed to have been graced by God to have one of the most beautiful bass voices in gospel music. For many, many years, he spent week-ends traveling with quartets and has sung at churches and concert venues all over the United States.

 

Roy was an outstanding basketball player at Rogers High School and was inducted into the Lauderdale County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

 

He served two years in the U. S. Army, and was retired from Reynolds Metals Company in Muscle Shoals. He was active in the labor movement for years, serving as officers and delegate of the United Aluminum Workers Union.

 

Colbert Memorial is assisting the family.
