Dr. Janet (Crawford) Bell

Dr. Janet Crawford Bell, 86, of Sheffield, died peacefully on January 27, 2018. She was born in Beckville, Texas, moved to Sheffield in 1958 as an educator and retired from Sheffield City Schools.

She is survived by her daughters, Juliane Bell Kilgore, and Meri Janet Bell Taylor (Craig), both of Sugar Hill, Georgia, and one grandson, Jesse Russell Kilgore, of Orem, Utah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Bell, her parents, Chester Lee and Julia Crawford, and an infant daughter, Jane Easton Bell.

Janet began her lifelong commitment to education as an exceptional student. After attending Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas she furthered her education by receiving her B.A. from Indiana University, M.A. from Florence State College (UNA) and her Ed.D. from the University of Alabama. She spent her career teaching elementary education at W.A. Threadgill and later she taught psychology at Northwest-Shoals Community College. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators and the Pilots International Service Club. Most recently she was active with the Tuscumbia Civitans. She was a world traveler, not only for sightseeing but to experience the culture of the people living in the countries she visited. Her favorite destinations were New York City and most anywhere in Italy.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and attended First Presbyterian Church in Sheffield for several years.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, February 3, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., at Colbert Memorial Chapel, Tuscumbia and the service will follow in the funeral home chapel. Tom McCormack will officiate. A private committal service will be held in Colbert Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sheffield Education Foundation (Sheffield City Schools).
